Congratulations! You have already made a big step by deciding to use ketamine to overcome your treatment resistant depression, PTSD, bi-polar disorder, severe anxiety or chronic pain. Now, all that is left to do is to prepare your mind and your body to receive the drug so it can work its “magic” most effectively. On the day of your first infusion, it is important to do and to remember a few things, to ensure you get the most from your treatment.
The first step to overcoming any obstacle is to ensure that the tools being used are functioning as efficiently as possible. Fortunately, in the case of ketamine infusions, this just means eating and sleeping correctly. Keep in mind that you should not have anything to eat for 6 hrs prior to the infusion nor should you have anything to drink for 2 hours prior. This is a safety precaution to prevent nausea and vomiting and, most importantly, the risk of aspiration.
That’s easy enough right? Now, all that is left to do is prepare the mind. It is important to remember that no drug is a silver bullet. In fact, some medications work best when an individual also applies their own experiences from personal growth, in addition to any pharmaceuticals. In the case of ketamine, in all the clinical trials, patients saw the greatest improvements when they supplemented their daily antidepressant(s), and regular therapy, with ketamine infusions.
Before, and perhaps after each infusion, be ready to complete a survey about your mental state. This is used to gauge the effectiveness of the drug and is helpful to you and your doctors in understanding how you respond to it.
While you are receiving your infusion, focus on feeling better. If your issue is mental, think about the things you have learned from talk therapy, and overcoming whatever troubles you. If your issue is physical, try to focus on the infusion entering your system and progressively relieving your pain.
Once your recovery period is up, which is determined by your physician, you will need to be driven home. This is a precautionary step taken in case you experience any of the non-life-threatening side-effects like nausea, euphoria, or mild hallucinations — which usually wear off within 2-hours.
Once your session is complete, you may have difficulty driving, so coordinate with a friend or loved one and have them accompany you to your appointment. With the average infusion for depression taking around 45 minutes, and chronic pain infusions lasting 3 or more hours, remind them that they should bring something to do while they wait.
While the benefits of any single infusion can be noticeable, for the best results, it is best to schedule multiple treatments. After an initial series of 4-6 infusions, occasional maintenance infusions, at various times throughout the year, may be necessary.
